Episode 1 – Hidden Bazookas and Passing the ‘Patsy’

Have you ever looked back on a game (of ASL) and wondered
“Where did it all go wrong?”, or “How did I manage to cement that victory?”.
Well, I certainly have. Some playings have a steady inevitability about them,
an accumulation of predictable, incremental effects. For many others though, if
you take any time to analyse what happened there will often be a moment, or
series of connected events that are pivotal to the final outcome. In this
series, we will spend a few minutes reviewing snippets of gameplay, to identify
and illustrate these “Critical Moments under the Microscope”!

Note: The following is available as a YouTube video here.

It’s round 1 of the 2021 Illuminating Rounds ASL Tournament,

Situation at the start of German Turn 2.

In this scenario the very important 3 American bazookas are
hidden until used by SSR, and for the German player this creates uncertainty
and a dilemma. The first Critical Moment is not on the board, or in the dice,
but in my imagination - “At least one of these counterattacking units must have
one of those killer bazookas!” This leads to a series of moves aimed at saving
my now ‘endangered’ SPW 250/9 – a unit I wanted to preserve.

So, the plan hinges on firstly ‘freezing’ the unit in 06K2
using Vehicle Bypass – risky with an Open Topped AFV. And then, moving into the
06L1 hex to strip Concealment and maybe even draw fire, but mostly then to
allow Bounding First Fire from the threatened halftrack into that then
unconcealed unit – a pretty good chance to effect and Break or Pin it, before
it gets a shot off with that ‘invisible’ bazooka.

Moving a halftrack (SPW 251/1) in bypass into 06K2, the next
Critical Moment came when the American Squad passed a Pre-AFV Attack Task Check
(the PAATC - or ‘Patsy’) to enable it to use reaction fire and attack the
halftrack in close combat. This is gutsy with a 6 Morale unit, the failure to
pass meaning a Pin and an effective ‘freeze’. Jason rolled low again on the Close
Combat attack and the halftrack was Eliminated.

Situation during German Turn 2 – the American Squad
eliminates the halftrack with CC Reaction Fire.

The Ami Squad was now free to fire outside its hex, meaning
that follow up manoeuvres were pinned by its fire, leading to a further
overcommitment of forces to strip Concealment and enable that all important Bounding
First Fire.

I then attempted to rescue the situation by trying to eliminate
these units, but nothing came off. I just threw ‘good money after bad’. It’s
fair to say that the dice were not favouring me with this series of connected
events, and this just amplified the effect of the two Critical Moments. As
losses mounted, initiative swung to the Defender and opportunities to progress
the attack were missed.

The irony in all this is that there were no bazookas with
these units at all! The worst possible outcome for the halftrack had I known
(or assumed) this was a Stun result.

I never really recovered from these losses and time spent
avoiding a bazooka shot that was never possible. Was there luck involved, of
course, but the impact of that good or bad luck could have been avoided had I
made a different decision about the probability or risk of the presence of a
bazooka in one or both of those two units.

For the record, I did capture the victory Hex in 03Q8, but I
was outnumbered in the end and did not have the resources to hang on against
most of the intact America order of battle.

So well done to Jason, and good luck in round 2 of the
tournament.

I’ll be back soon with another Critical Moment. Until then,
roll low ... when it counts!

This is something a little different from me. I've been a long time ASL player and having posted the below AAR on facebook though I would also post it here (apologies in advance for the heavy ASL terminology and acronyms).

Hatten in Flames was always going to take a special place
for me in the ASL compendium. I am lucky enough to have met the designer Andrew
Rogers, and his friend, and my opponent for this game David Shannon, soon after
moving to Melbourne many years ago now.

After completing this first play (i.e. HF1) it has indeed taken
up position alongside my other all-time favourite Red Barricades.

This AAR focuses on the last moments of the game. Earlier
however, Dave asked if he could take the German defenders “to get some practice
on the defence he claimed”. Fair enough I thought, I’m partial to the Yanks
although not keen on the 6 morale (more on that later!). In picking out the OOB
I randomly chose Lt Rogers from the counter mix when looking for the 9-1 – good
omen I thought! This seemingly unlikely pick was an augury of things to come.

Dave’s defence was considered and despite early bad luck
breaking his INF gun and MMG, fought a tenacious withdrawal to hold the last 2
victory locations with just a single turn left to play. The victory conditions
call for the Yanks to take all the victory locations, or if they have a functioning
M18 surviving at game end, to take all but one.

I would say that during the game, luck swung wildly for both
sides, but mostly with Dave’s dice (his now infamous ‘Samurai’ dice – from ASL
Precision Battle Dice). More on this topic later.

My last turn saw me in a tough situation, and I decided to
focus on one of the victory locations (K5) and save one of my Hellcats in the
process. I had to have things go my way. Suffice to say, I managed to get Lt
Rogers, with 3 squads another 7-0 and a hero (created earlier) into the victory
location in the advance phase, and to knock off the defenders in a 4-1 Melee
(not H-t-H). All I had to do now was survive and fight off the counterattack in
his player turn.

Enter the Samurai dice. Germans Prep Fired into K5, 8 at +2 Leader
directed… and the roll… 1,1!! Lt Rogers and the 3 squads break, the 7-0 Pins and
the hero wounds – bloody Yank 6 Morale. From the jaws of victory … Dave poured
in more fire (ineffective this time), then assault moved his counterattack
adjacent. My defensive first/final fire ineffective. It would have been very different
if Lt Rogers’ stack had not all broken (would have had 36+ at +1 at the adjacent
troops!!). Best laid plans …

After the Advancing Fire, my Pinned 7-0 and Wounded hero
stood fast (more so than my player morale which was severely shaken). Lt Rogers
Low Crawled away in fright into the street, and I had to decide to leave the
Pinned 7-0 leader with the Hero to double my firepower for the upcoming CC –
despite the added Ambush risk.

Dave advanced into the hex and I avoided being Ambushed,
despite his -3 modifier (Concealed unit and 8-1 leader). The odds were now in
Dave’s favour, the tables turned. Consulting my Rat Pocket Chart I wondered
what the chances of surviving the H-t-H Melee that he had just declared – after
all the whole scenario came down to this last roll. The 4-1 odds had a kill# of
11, and with a -1 leader, that meant 12 to Casualty Reduce. Lucky I avoided the
Ambush I thought!

OK, so that last one is not for the game - it is my new paint organiser ... but having this has helped inspire me to push forward and complete some of what you see above! Didn't realise how many paints I had ... :-(.

Apart from the items on the Jump Off markers (which are home cast, or for the weapons off the sprue) and the picket fence, this is all scratch built.

Thanks for looking, feel free to leave a comment or question.

Recently we re-fought 'The Battle of Raab, 1809' for the third time. We used Napoleon's Battles 4th Ed. rule set and a revised scenario, which has since been extended with some 'Additional Options' to provide some options to further balance the scenario.

You may want to read the scenario is available here.

This time, we recorded the game using a time lapse from an overhead web cam.

Enjoy. Comments and questions welcome!
I have finally managed to paint the 2 of the scratch builds I showed in the previous posts, here and even older here. This is all part of the slow preparation towards being able to play TooFatLardies' "Chain of Command".

Here are some pictures taken of the finished product (with some 28mm Warlord Games late war German Heer for scale).
Hope you like them! Feel free to post any comments.
Somewhat confusingly, I'm posting a quick AAR for the second outing of this scenario, held at Little Wars 2016, in Moorabin, Melbourne this weekend past.

So, after a very short discussion, my gaming buddy (Vince) and I decided to put our hard work on public display.

In preparation we modified the scenario from the learnings from our initial playing. Due to a lack of time, despite intentions, we weren't able to swap out any of our older figures with any newly painted ABs - maybe next time.

An early start on Sunday morning saw us travel from the north side of Melbourne to the southern suburb of Moorabin and the Kingston City Hall.

We quickly set up the board and I laid out a pre-prepared defense.
Vince set up to attack in the center and on the Austrian right flank, an a-historical, but interesting alternative to the strategy employed from our first game (an attack on the center and on the Austrian left flank). Below, Eugene contemplates the field before him.
I don't have many pics at hand to show the development of the attack. Fundamentally, the Austrians had to realign to the French attack which unbalanced things for a while. However, the realignment managed to present problems for the French and a number of attacks were made, some repulsed, others drove home. Kis Megyer proved a tough nut to crack with a strong Austrian Line Brigade in the fortified farm complex.

Suffice to say it was a see-sawing affair, and by the time we had to pack up, the game was in the balance. Here are some quick smartphone snaps of the state of the game - from the Austrian left to right.
Our project to refight the Battle

Well, a few months ago, we
committed to putting it all together. The original plan was to hold the game
over the long weekend adjacent the Melbourne Cup Day holiday as a part of a
regular annual event for our gaming group. For various reasons this event
didn’t happen (we were not ready in any case) and we ended up organising an
ad-hoc, short notice outing for the scenario version 0.1 in mid-December. What
follows is the preparation, the refight itself and the wash-up.

We have used Napoleon’s Battles for
many years. The recently released version 4 was used for the first time by us in
this game. As we had a noob, we opted for using the standard rules (with a few
minor, but playable optionals, but importantly no Initiative or Re-rolls) and played the
slightly less onerous interpenetration rules. We own NB2 and NB3 and used
various items from these rule sets, such as markers and templates, as these are
not changed in NB4.

The updated NB4 Built Up Area and

For those not familiar, these rules
are designed for Army and Corps level actions and the basic unit is a brigade
of infantry or cavalry. Only Heavy and Horse artillery are present, with medium
guns abstracted into the brigades. A heavy reliance on command and control
exists in the game and as will be seen, is a problem for the army structure of
the Austrians which without Corps.

The original goal was to field a

We drew inspiration from the
official NB3 Raab scenario, but also from the works by Bowden & Tarbox, and
the more recent trilogy from Gill. Gill was used heavily for the OB. Bowden

A link to the Scenario Card we used
is here.
It is somewhat in draft! As this was a first attempt at the scenario, we were
guided by the NB3 scenario for Victory Conditions, based on control of the
major battlefield features being Kis Megyer, Szabadhegy, etc.

Three key elements of the
battlefield that strongly impact the balance are Kis Megyer (a fortified farm),
the historical difficulty the French cavalry had crossing the Pandza on their
left and the movement penalty presented along the length of the Pandza. How
much of an impediment and protection these are for French and Austrians is key
to a balanced game. Gill referred to two items which we incorporated into the scenario
terrain, i.e. the discovery of a small bridge that enabled the French left to
finally cross the Pandza, and the way in which the Viscay (a rivulet) disordered
the inexperienced Insurrection cavalry. There are many options for the scenario
in relation to the terrain itself, however we settled for the following special
rules (and adjusted as below):

"All buildings have a +1 combat
modifier, except Kis-Megyer, which is a +3 fortification.

The Pandcza stream is fordable
by infantry and generals at all points, although infantry must be in column or
march column formation to cross. It is fordable by cavalry and artillery only
at a ford and they must be in column, march-column or limbered formation to
cross, or at a bridge.

The Viscay rivulet is a minor
obstacle and the following scenario special rule applies: Inexperienced Cavalry
are disordered crossing this obstacle unless they do so in column or march
column using a ford. No movement penalty applies for crossing this obstacle
(Designers note: historically, the Insurrection Light Cavalry were disordered
by this obstacle and this rule is present to represent this)."

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">

We also opted for a D10 roll for
the French to find the crossing. On arrival at the location (1), a 1, then 3,
then 5 etc per movement phase spent searching for the crossing, before being
able to cross on the subsequent movement phase. The crossing was deemed a
Bridge (after Gill) rather than a ford. This makes a difference under NB4
rules.

A similar approach for the arrival
of the RD Austrian reserves was taken. Neither of these updates are in the

Here is an update on progress of my 28mm scratch building for my Chain of Command terrain (earlier post).

It has been a lean period for gaming and modelling over the last 8 weeks or so. I have however managed to finish the construction of the buildings started in my last post. Images of the small warehouse are below (with some Warlord Games 28mm plastic German Grenadiers for scale).
Well, it has been a long time between blogs.

While feeling unmotivated to paint what I know I should be painting, I have been pursuing some more terrain diversions.

I determined that it was better to do something towards my modelling and gaming goals, rather than do nothing and wait for the right time to complete that painting task.

This time, its 28mm Scratch Built Buildings. These will eventually be used for Chain of Command. Eventually will be a while away!

I had found inspiration from the following sources ...

SolventAbuseUK on Youtube.
The Terrain Tutor on You Tube.
Matakishi's Tea House (www.matakishi.com) and specifically the Carentan project.

and more recently (and ambitiously)

The work of Emmanuel Nouaillier, which can be seen at his blog and also at various places around the web including here. Truly inspiring.

Here are the fruits of my labour over the past few weeks. There is still a bit to do - including all the painting of course!!

These are using the techniques from Matakishi's Tea House (www.matakishi.com) and specifically the Carentan project:

This one is made form foamcore, styrene and Vallejo stucco.
Just a quick post to show some of my slow progress on painting some WW2 German Grenadiers for IABSM.

These are BF plastics from the Open Fire box. Not the greatest 15mm figures I ever painted, but they are also, not the worst.

After spending a lot of time researching, the guides by HeresyBrush and Flame Of War are pretty useful.

There are some uniform and colour variations as I was experimenting and learning!

Sorry about the photos - they are a bit lacking as I had to get this done in a rush.

Let me know what you think.
The 'Roman' has completed the next stage with completion of the painting.

I had struggled with the shield design for a time, and finally settled on making a cut-out template from an image of 28mm decal, and used this to spray paint the shape, which was then worked over with a brush for the detail.

For tutorial assistance in painting the face I went here.
I'll post again when complete.

Mostly used an airbrush, with a brush for touch ups, some dry brushing and a final black wash followed by some clean up with water and cue-tips.
Pak 40s - lazy Sunday afternoonA cold and quiet afternoon here and so after looking at this video I was inspired to do the Pak 40s from the Open Fire! box I received for Father's Day.

For the first time I attempted a modulation technique, along with now more familiar techniques for pin washing, applying a filter, chipping and weathering using enamels.

Hope you like the results. Feel free to leave a comment.

I have tried to weather these more realistically than the Russian Tanks (here) I finished before - still they turned out a bit rougher than I had first intended. Take a look here to see how they looked prior to weathering and completion of details and tracks.

My only disappointment is with the dust effects I achieved with pigments was lost when I applied a coat of gloss varnish (for protection). I need a new method here - maybe I'll try a matt varnish after the dust and that will help keep the dusty look?

Here they are - hope you like them, Leave a comment!

Let me explain by saying I wanted to get some figures that allowed me to practice painting flesh - for another project which is a bit more 'on topic'. You will immediately see why I chose these figures!

The other main reason I chose these is that the casting and molds are outstanding - the quality is simply unsurpassed for figures in my experience. These figures are roughly 28mm scale.

There is a third in the series awaiting further flesh painting practice!

I should credit ThePaintingClinic video here, for the technique used to paint the stockings.

The Malifaux game itself looks interesting - a very thematic Skirmish type game. These figures are 'Ronin' and part of a larger group which constitutes a player's posse. I won't be pursuing the game though as time does not allow - at least not at the moment!

This was after viewing this video on ThePaintingClinic YouTube channel which inspired me to attempt the painting and this then got me thinking about the gaming side too. It has been a long time since then and getting these models to this point, including deciding on IABSM in preference to FoW, and researching various techniques on AFVs and 15mm WW2.

This M4A3 (W) 76mm is ready for track painting and final weathering. The chipping is complete, and hopefully approrpriate enough and not a-historical or unrealistic.

Decals are Battlefront. Paints are Vallejo (Model Colour and Panzer Aces). Weathering will be AK Washes and Streaking Grimes.

Let me know if you want any info and what you think by leaving a comment!

Having been inspired (or perhaps possessed!) after reading the chipping and rust sections of Mig Jiminez' FAQ2, I wanted to try out some of these ideas in 15mm scale.

Yes so these are a bit over the top, but my 'story' behind these old and rusty behemoths is that they are survivors, grognards, aged soldiers - and they look their age!!

These models are literally a snap to put together, I spent less than 15 minutes each getting them built ready for undercoating. The only additions I made was scoring on the side skirts of the T-35.

I really enjoyed trying some new techniques here, and will refine them for the future - although I have another T-35 undercoated who will get similar treatment!

Let me know if you have any questions about techniques and products. Thanks to the FAQ2 book, HeresyBrush and ThePaintingClinic for ideas and inspiration.
StuGsI posted images my first model over on the HeresyBrush forum, and had some good feedback on improving on my first attempt, which suggested I reduce the size of the chipping and lessen the chipping on the main part of the tank's body.

I have tried to follow this advice on the remaining StuGs, but perhaps needed to take it further.

The second StuGs were painted as the first, and all three are now matt varnished too.

I think they are an improvement, let me know what you think.
(The first StuG is on the right, or # 412)
Painting the Stug III Gs.A quick update to show some pictures of my first attempt at painting 15mm WW2 vehicles.

I owe much to HeresyBrush and Ruben for inspiration here. I have unashamedly followed his formula (more or less) for this model. I really should have started with some infantry, but couldn't resist. I am very pleased with the results - please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Base colours are Vallejo MC Middlestone, with Reflective Green and German Camo Med Brown for the disruptive camouflage. No modulation attempted! AK NATO Filter used. Weathering is WMC Dark Oxide and 50/50 Ivory/Sand Yellow for highlights. Sponge and brush techniques used for scratches and rust spots. AK washes for outlining, and streaking. AK Light Rust Wash over WMC Dark Oxide for track applique armor. Tracks are VPA Track Base, with mixture of AK Dark and Rust washes applied generously. Enough details - go visit HeresyBrush for a step by step!

Oh - and it needs a coat of Matt Varnish still. Waiting for his friends to be finished!

Here are a few pics of the completed mapboard. This is a result of quite a bit of work from my good gaming buddy Vincenzo and I.

The creek in the centre of the board is the Pándzsa bordered by marshy and steep banks, with the fortress farm of Kis-Megyer in the centre and the town of Szabadhegy in an 'L' shape. The Austrians defended the Pándzsa taking the high ground, Kis-Megyer and Szabadhegy Town as their positions, with cavalry covering their left flank and the ford where cavalry could cross.

Unfortunately, I forgot to put the 2 bridges (on crossings on the Austrian right), on the board for most of these photos.
